My love language is “gifts” —I love giving presents and I love receiving presents. And, in either of the aforementioned scenarios, I love presents that have a purpose. For me, gifts with purpose underscore the thoughtfulness, and effort behind the selection of the gift. Not too long ago,Rob purchased a necklace for me from a company called, “The Giving Keys“. The company is based in L.A. and was founded by actress and singer/songwriter, Caitlin Crosby, when she started wearing a hotel key as a necklace while on tour. She then had the idea to start engraving old, used keys with inspirational words. As friends and fans took interest in her key, Caitlin decided to make her own line of key necklaces with inspiring words on them to sell at her concerts. Since its inception in 2008, the company has helped 19 people transition out of homelessness.
Giving Keys is located in the heart of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. They make all of their jewelry onsite (MADE IN THE USA!!) and hire people from non-profit organizations to engrave each of its keys. One partner, Chrysalis, helps the company to find more employees looking for a second chance. Chrysalis is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and low-income individuals by providing the resources and support needed to find and retain employment.
The Giving Keys are carried in over 1200 stores in the US and internationally including Nordstrom, Fred Segal and Kitson. Rob purchased my key from the site directly. They offer a great price range and selection. For more information on the company and its products, visit this link.
I’ve been purchasing them from from a cool local hipster store, and giving them to friends. The idea behind the keys is simple: purchase a key for yourself, and embrace the word on the key. Then, give it away to someone who need to embrace that word even more than you. Your initial purchase of a key helps to provide someone with a job.
There’s nothing better than a gift that gives back. If you know of other feel good gifts, please share in the comments below!
